OFF-TOPIC!! It’s kitty commentary day!
The last cat toy I bought the kitties was a ridiculously huge success. It was a pretty plain toy–a stuffed top portion with catnip and such with some natural straw-like fibers out the bottom. Jefferson went NUTS with this toy … completely out of control. He was leaping up 3-4 ft in the air and dangling from this toy, falling off the cat tower with the toy, and just generally being ridiculous. He’s been into toys but never like this–with some experimenting I came to the conclusion that it was the natural fiber bottom that really got him excited to play. The rustling sound, the natural smells, the shredable fibers… etc.
Initially I thought it was made from some type of straw but after really seeing it and feeling the texture, i guessed it was actually made out dried corn-husk. Sure enough, while at the farm the other day I went into the dead/harvested corn field and picked some of the dried husks from the plant. I figured that I would sew the husk into a toy some how to get the cats really into the toy.
Well, it turns out that simply tying the husk to some string and flapping it around is amazing and gets the interest of all the cats. Jefferson was launching himself at the toy, flipping all over the place and generally having an absolute blast. Grey kitty has been a bit crazy since introducing this toy and it’s bee hilarious.
If you ever have a chance to get dried corn-husks they made the perfect free/reused kitty toy ever! Happy cats having fun! It’s been non-stop thrashing around for 3 days!! The cats have been really quite smitten with with the new toy! It also has a really great little fluttery movement when in the air that seems to be the most enticing motion of rht ecats… all of them have launched toys all over the place chasing this reused toy!
Hmm … we’re going to have to track down some of those!
Will have to try this! You can find dried corn husks at some stores if they have a Mexican food section. I’ve found them at Wegmans for my parrots.
I was going through your blog thanks to Pet Blog Hop and I so loved this article – gosh I try to imagine JuneBug doing this in the RV… Too funny
