Today is an exciting day for me, Starfish to the Sea Animal Rescue will be pulling my foster dog from a shelter in West Virginia (barring anything strange). Dexter will be my first foster dog and I am very excited! He’s a 1 year old Australian Cattle Dog who is apparently very good natured and friendly. It sounds like he was in a somewhat neglectful situation since he came into the shelter with an embedded collar (which is healing nicely).
I’ve wanted to foster dogs for a very long time but never had the time or space to add another dog. Recently, however, we were finally approved for a variance and got a fence installed on our property. With the fence, my mum (who I’m living with since I lost my job and until I get on my feet) agreed to allow foster dogs into the house (secretly, I think she’s excited).
My motives are certainly half selfish… I love dogs and I know I can’t have more for “keeps” right now and I think having foster siblings will help Shayne improve around other dogs. Of course the other half of my motives are very pure. Dogs like Shayne and Rio, high energy, high drive, herding dogs tend to decline very quickly in shelters (and unfortunately end up there frequently) and I want to do what I can to keep these types of dogs out of kill-shelters.
The rescue founder is picking him up today and she’ll keep him for the weekend to get him vetted. Then early next week (I think) Dexter will get to come to his foster home! I’m sure lots will be posted about him as I get to know him!
Yay. I’m so excited to see more pictures of this cutie. And to see how he works out in your lovely dog family. I know you’re going to have fun. 😀
Congratulations on your new life as a foster mom. ACDs are the best, and thanks for getting him out of the kennel. ACDs do not do well in a kennel environment, there is too much fun, energy and smarts wrapped up in their minds and bodies to be left alone in a kennel.
Enjoy the new boy in your life.
Yay yay yay!! I am so excited for you. I hope things with your new Dexter are going well. He looks like such a cutie. I would love to be able to foster one day. Good for you. Have fun! Can’t wait to read your adventures. 🙂
